As the autumn chill creeps over the Blue Ridge foothills and the nights grow longer, the Northeast Georgia History Center is preparing to pull back the veil on the mysterious side of history. Appalachian and Hispanic cultures both possess incredibly rich oral histories tied directly to the autumn harvest.
Taking place during the final week of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll explore how early settlers and ancient Mesoamerican cultures used oral storytelling and understanding of the natural world to survive the wild frontier. Throughout the day, students can meet Admiral David Farragut and rotate through hands-on academic and artistic stations explicitly designed to reveal how both mountain settlers and Hispanic communities used storytelling, nature, and symbolism to explain the world around them.
