History Center Fall Lecture Series | Tuesday, November 10th, 7:00 PM
Divided by Faith: The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre
Sponsored by UNG College of Arts & Letters
With Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Johanna Luthman
In 1572, the royal court in Paris was celebrating a wedding that was supposed to cement a peace between the Catholic Valois dynasty and rebelling Protestant nobles. A few days later, Paris was reeling from days of bloody violence, which left at least two thousand dead in Paris, and thousands more killed in the provinces. The religious civil wars in France would continue for another two decades. What happened in Paris in 1572? This lecture explored this bloody event and places it in the context of the religious politics and violence of the Reformation period, when the creation of Protestantism created a deep rift in the Christian church of western and central Europe.
There will be a Question and Answer session with our guest speaker at the end of the presentation.
